tap+a smashes are much better because you can charge them making them more powerful
they're effectively the most useful attack you have
nothing stings more than a fully charge falcon eblow
you just gotta learn how to do tilt attacks over smashes.

c-stick with the gamepad can charge them

in smash 4 holding the c-stick in a direction charges smashes

you can rebind controls somewhere on the wii u version but its only for individual Profiles.
