usually you use some undocumented format the developers come up with. Most games with modding have their own nonsensial model format with a converter for people to use.

I know, it kinda sucks. I don't understand why people don't just use OBJ/DAE with an XML/JSON file for additional properties.

Or make a working DTS importer/exporter for blender. That would work.
