These kinds of servers dominate the list. Then pretty much everyone packs them, leaving every other server on the list a ghost town. Whenever I boot up my server, I have a set time that's 15 minutes or so after startup. If nobody joins my server by then, I shut down. 9 times out of 10, I end up closing at that time.

Or maybe not everyone shares the same opinion as you and they enjoy the servers that they're playing on, either that or your server is bad.

Let's look at the top of the server list.

This is an opinion-based comparison of the servers currently at the top of the list if sorted by playercount.

Servers labeled in red are servers that are overdone and/or poorly done.
Servers labeled in black are servers that are hosted by someone with a notably poor reputation. ( Rules of a red label may apply as well. )
Servers labeled in orange are servers that are good, but I believe have overstayed their welcome. ( Yes, this is somewhat redundant because the red label partially covers this. )
Servers without a label are either not applicable, or I was unable to come up with a conclusion as to how they stand amongst other servers.



As you can see, there's still a few good servers out there, but look at the top. Too many CityRPGs, Jail Escapes, and racing servers.

If people weren't disgusted by non-dedicated/home-based servers, I'd try to host more often. I think my Medieval DM is quite fun once people come on.

I tried hosting it just now, but something's wrong with Slayer.

I'm still working on my project, it'll get finished eventually(if I ever get around to hosting more often).
I also probably need a dedicated hosting service of some kind, but i'll probably leave that until after beta testing finishes(which will probably be a long way from now).
