I would like to get a license but all the stuff for the exam is in books you have to buy

This is my only radio.
And I'm working on building one of these and these from junkbox parts. Together the parts cost ~$60.

oh man the circutry in this is a mess:

I'm surprised he even wa able to make a circuit diagram for it

but it still seems pretty neato, my sdr can't receive shortwave, but I'm gonna buy another one and mod it

The wiring in that radio is supposed to be awful - the guy who made it used what's called "dead bug" construction, which is sort of a lazy version of Manhattan-style. Lazy, but it works a treat (usually). And he most likely made the schematic before actually making the radio.

Also, you don't need to buy another SDR dongle to do shortwave - just buy a Ham-It-Up frequency upconverter. More expensive, but easier and better.

yeah but there's a mod for it on certain chips http://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-direct-sampling-mode/

and I don't want to sacrifice mine to do it because it's a R820T micro so I can't do it
an upconverter is an option though
