Author Topic: Town leaders want to get tough on tobacco  (Read 2492 times)

I truthfully believe in making the tobacco age to 21, because it can prevent people in the future from trying tobacco at an early age. Honestly, things like cigars and hookah are not good for you but nowhere as bad for you as cigarettes. I think cigarettes are the real culprit here, they are disgusting chemically-made pieces of paper. The only natural tobacco product I can think of is pipe tobacco, not to mention, it has a very pleasant aroma too.

What difference does it make if people start doing it at 18 or 21? They're not less likely to try it or get addicted at 21. The reason alcohol is illegal for U21 is because of the negative health effects it has on an adolescent brain -- of which nicotine has none.

You are right, but maybe it'd encourage more people to not start at an early age. People who start at an early age or more likely to be addicted.

Except it is the addictive quality for a habit that is harmful at any age.

Cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, all that kinda stuff is just bad in general and has no real use when there are so many other non-addictive solutions that can do everything that the addictive ones can. If they were straight up made illegal altogether and quitting aids that reduce withdrawal symptoms distributed to smokers I would personally be 100% okay with it.

e-cigarettes shouldnt be banned anywhere cept private businesses if they want.

i wish all tobacco products were banned everywhere because i'm tired of my parents smoking around me and it hurts my lungs and stuff when i accidentally inhale some of it
my dad is the worst because he's a goddamn chain smoker

This will never work, you can't make extreme bans to anything, we all know how prohibition went.

They always change these laws and stuff but I really doubt it makes much of a difference in the amount of people that smoke. I also really don't understand how actual cigars get lumped in with cigarettes. Most people that smoke cigars aren't smoking a ton of them and it's an occasional thing, so it's really not that detrimental to their health. Living in PA is pretty sweet for cigars since the only tax I have to pay on them is sales tax.

If you're buying enough of something that tax matters, you aren't using it occasionally.

do you have any idea how high sin tax is

Tobacco and booze are things that should be heavily taxed, why shouldn't the state government take advantage of it? I would. You don't need alcohol or booze, it's a leisure thing to do (smoke or drink). I see no harm in having high sales taxes for them.

I do, and apparently you didn't get my point.

The thing is, the government doing that is literally the government taking away your freedom to do something that you want to do. I like living in a country where you're allowed to do what you want. Sometimes I really enjoy a smoke at night when I'm sitting alone just thinking. I sure as hell could sit out there in the cold and think without the cigarette, but it's what really makes the experience. That's pretty much the only time I smoke. It takes me over a month to get through a pack of cigarettes -- I don't even know because they go stale before I finish them and I have to buy more. Anyway, the point is that I don't want the government that's supposed to improve my life telling me what to do, or what I can't do. I feel as a human being my body is my own land and I should be able to do with it as I please, even if that includes the occasional bad stuff.

Once again, I make the point that in the case of cigarettes, its not a bad thing that only affects you. Other people have the right to not breathe in other people's smoke.

If my bad habit was sniffing tubes of anthrax and I started sniffing it in crowded subway tunnels, I think there'd be government involvement. An extreme brown townogy, but regardless its correct.

I do agree though, if your bad habit has no effect on anyone else, then go ahead.

I'm sorry if the tiny bit of toxic air I exhale a few times a week drifts out of my backyard into your general vicinity. I never said there shouldn't be laws about where you can smoke. I like the idea of being able to enjoy a meal or visit a park without having to deal with tobacco.
