Practice your PR speak, and make sure that your online accounts are either all private, or that you only use them to make announcements. As soon as you display any bit of personality on Twitter/Tumblr etc, you're at risk of being put in that position.

It depends on how many people think your game is stuff.

You can probably tell by its lack of publicity, sales, and good reviews.
A few people mad at a good game for some reason doesn't make the game bad. But if a lot of people don't like it you may have done something wrong.
