I'm making a film and I asked a band if I could use their songs in it and they said yes, but only for non commercial use. If I were to enter in a film festival but give them any profits I made, would I be legally safe from being sued?

I don't really know, but I guess you should ask the band about it, and put credits with big text at the end of the movie.

I think it'd be easier and safer to just not accept income from the video at all.

Why not just ask them to clarify it. If it's a contest and you win I wouldn't really consider it commercial use but I don't know anything

Give them like 45 to 50 percent of the cut. Easier to ask for forgivness than permision :cookieMonster:
