what exactly do you fail? Does it affect your grades? will it affect your high school? will it affect anything in your life?

You pretty much just lower your grades at the beginning of the school year.
Like for me, If i didnt do my "Summer Reading" i would start off with a pretty bad grade, ~25-30% off my grade on the first day.
