Video Editing Megathread

Whats video editing? :
Quote
The term video editing can refer to: The process of manipulating video images. Once the province of expensive machines called video editors, video editing software is now available for personal computers and workstations. Video editing includes cutting segments (trimming), re-sequencing clips, and adding transitions and other Special Effects
- Wikipedia

So, how can i make/edit my own videos?
Now, you can either : 1. Download editing software, 2. you can... well thats probably all you can do

Recording :

FRAPS
Os : Windows

Fraps is probably not the best but if you want something to easily be installed is a good choice, the trial version has a time cap for recording though, so if you want to record long sequences of video, your going to have to upgrade, not to mention each recording can take up gigabytes of space, so if you want space for other things i would delete old/unused recordings
download :
http://www.fraps.com/download.php

ill put more recording software suggestions here later when people let me know they exist

Video Editing software :

Windows Movie Maker
OS : Windows

Windows movie maker, oh the memories of 2007-2008 YTP's and stuffty videos, you can though make a legitimate good video with this if you tried to, for example dayren (yes, that FAMOUSE roblox youtuber) made a good tutorial, ill skip all of the roblox portions and basically it will describe it pretty well : http://youtu.be/-HqgbD_BzKs?t=2m9s , now your going to want to use an older version as the new versions of windows movie maker is basically just another powerpoint
download : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-movie-maker-download (get the vista version, if not vista, maybe windows 7 is another good version, i havent used it in like 4-5 years so dont yell at me for now knowing)

Sony Vegas (theres a forget ton of versions)
OS : Windows

Sony vegas is alot more better when it comes to editing, theres alot more freedom and effects, however, it isnt free and it can be unstable (everytime i close my copy it crashes right as it closes) but i recommend it if your looking for some high quality editing software

IMovie
OS : Macintosh

Imovie is the best video editing software for mac, it comes installed with royalty free soundtracks and sound effects installed, but when i used it (on my mobile device) it didnt have alot of freedom, infact, less than windows movie maker, for mac users its the best they have, but its not terrible, its not as unstable as sony vegas and is free on Mac computers, however on mobile devices it costs money.
Download : https://www.apple.com/mac/imovie/

ill update this thread as i learn more (and a better OP is developed)

Also worth noting that despite claims from literally everyone on the internet, editing software is NOT expensive.

And despite me not using it, Adobe Premire is worth noting too.

Add videopad video editor somewhere, it's basic and free, i use it for school stuff

iMovie isn't the only video editor software for Macs.

My school's news team uses Final Cut Pro.

This. Final Cut Pro and After Effects are both better than iMovie.

lolno, there's waay better stuff that's developed by apple for professional purposes. final cut pro is one, the other (which i use) is motion 5.

also add camtasia and screenflow to the op please - they both basically have a screen recorder and editing software mixed into one, but the versatility of their editing interfaces are comparable to imovie's.

For a free and powerful editing software, use Lightworks. The free version can export to Mp4 in 720p and is only missing features from the full version that hardcore professionals would need. It has multiple masking options, speed adjustment (including reverse), greenscreens, a completely customizable interface and a bunch of other features that I don't want to bother writing. I'd almost put it on par with Sony Vegas Pro.

the ability to export in 1080p is not something that only "hardcore professionals" would need

I think he meant other than that.
