I'm pretty sure all of what rggbnnnn just said was half-way pseudo-knowledge and guesstimating. If you don't even get a ping and others can join, then it's the fact that the server host is using the disable UPnP feature that lets you host a server that people can connect to without port forwarding, but for a lot of people this method doesn't work due to ISP/Router configuration.
