Granted, we had the better technology for warfare at that time, and South Vietnam helping us, so we eventually "won" the war and got out of there.

I guess if someone were to invade your country and you had to protect yourself and your family you would probably gear up and try your best to ensure their survival much like a soldier would. There were two enemy combatants in Vietnam. The Vietcong which were communist guerillas who operated in South Vietnam and were backed by North Vietnam
