Did you not read the loving thread. The laptop is super old. It already has Windows Vista.

windows vista is slower than windows xp.

OP is clearly asking for a Linux distribution because those tend to work well with old laptops. It's in the loving title. If you're not going to be helpful, then don't post.

Ubuntu has recently been selling out a stuff-ton.
It sends all of your dash searches and other information to Canonical.
And it's super bloated.

If you want the amazing amount of support that Ubuntu has with less bloat and stufftyness, try Xubuntu, or if your laptop is to slow for that try Lubuntu like Deve said.

I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop (coincidentally it had Windows Vista installed before) that had 2GBs of RAM and some ancient Intel CPU. It runs really nicely and is very responsive/fast/whatever. In my opinion Ubuntu's desktop environment looks much nicer than whatever Xubuntu and Lubuntu use.

I'd also recommend Linux Mint and Fedora as my experience in the past with them has been very positive.

1. Lubuntu and Xubuntu use different desktop environments.
2. They don't look very good at the start because you can theme them yourself. Just install numix and some icons then change the desktop background. Boom, pretty desktop. The point of DE's like XFCE, LXDE, and KDE is that they are nearly infinitely customizable. Looking nice is not a problem.
3. Unity (Ubuntu's DE) is one of the least customizable DE's out there. So much so that in order to change the GTK theme you need 3rd party tools.

Excuse me, but did you just suggest that he install Windows 8 on an old laptop?

Maybe you should stop trying to help.
