There are so many reasons that an auth fail can happen, you shouldn't ever think it's malicious intent unless you have actual proof of it.

Additionally, they would have to have authenticated successfully to begin with in order to have connected initially. The auth failure could have happened for any a number of uncommon yet relatively reasonable reasons. And piracy isn't likely one of them.
