this has officially gone TOO FAR
otto-san:
i think maybe "public school" is a bit too specific
maybe a better way to put it generally is "a certain standard of education" but that's a bit wordy
anyway compulsory education is 100% yes at least through high school, education serves an extremely important role in society; having a highly-educated population is a massive key to having a highly-successful society
Maxwell.:
education is good and needs to be mandatory
what doesn't need to be mandatory is public schools with people
otto-san:
to be fair, public/private schooling serves a latent function of socialisation (social skills and knowledge and the sort, helping to internalise culture of the region, etc), but the same could potentially be served in other ways, though likely not as effectively on their own.

but if the kid or parents wants to go private they should get that, it's their choice is what I'm saying
in Scotland it's mandatory for public education until high school at age 16, after that you can leave school all together and get a job, go to college or uni which is free to an extent
