Relationship building, dating... That's why it's mandatory.
if that had anything to do with it, then homeschooling wouldn't be legal...

Let me rephrase that one: communication and interpersonal skills along with basic english comprehension. Plus the other things I listed like exercising and eating healthy. All these things can be taught through middle-school but unfortunately the education system is too forgeted to do it right.

It does help build street smarts, but that's not the main reason for it, it's just as a result of having a lot of kids in the same place...

I haven't used any knowledge from school other than english last summer.
dude, there is basic maths and decisions in construction, no doubt about it

Unless you have someone behind you telling you everything you need to do then you'll definitely have to make measurements and stuff

Plus the other things I listed like exercising and eating healthy.
those may be reasons to continue requiring it, but it's pretty unlikely that they were the reason for it in the first place. people weren't that concerned about those things until recently

I said physical labor not construction. I do maintenance. I kept an island camp running with a crew of like 15 of us. We were given a list of stuff to do and we did it.

I'm not saying school shouldn't be mandatory I'm saying for people who aren't book smart like myself, I would rather not waste my time learning what atoms are or "A + B = C" stuff. It's not for everyone. Not everyone needs advance knowledge of everything.  I'd rather learn like I said, how mortgages work, how to manage my money, how to buy a car, how to do taxes and stuff like that. I'm not saying school shouldn't be mandatory. I'm saying there needs to be a wider variety in classes.

education isn't just about information, it's also about teaching practical mental skills (not just higher-level application skills such as filing taxes or filling out checks) which are all generally useful and help the individual apply the information they learn

for example, mathematics classes teach information which may not be useful to all students, but the underlying skills (critical thinking, problem solving, etc.) that drive mathematics are useful to everyone and are extremely important for modern jobs.

p much every homeschooled kid I've met is socially autistic

stay in (public) school, kids

p much every homeschooled kid I've met is socially autistic

this is 100% true

it's even worse with religious families

tfw I meet both these criteria
Life is hell. For the love of God don't homeschool your kids.

I'd rather learn like I said, how mortgages work, how to manage my money, how to buy a car, how to do taxes and stuff like that.

But these things are basically:
"A + B = C" stuff

yes public school should be mandatory, but it should start later, making people wake up at 6 o'clock is a human rights abuse

The problem with kids being homeschooled for religious reasons is that it forgets the kids up. I've met a lot of people raised like this, most of whom eventually became atheist, cut off ties with their family or became incredibly depressed.

The forgeted up thing is that many religions in north america come with a sense of guilt. The kids are brought up to feel guilty about everything.

Haha wow, I also agree that if someone is home schooled, they need to be taught what's in the curriculum by law.
