I think any religion is past it's relevance if those practicing it resort to committing atrocities in the name of their religion.

Like, it's your belief that's on the line, is it really that loving important to kill people over? Why can't you kill people over normal things like money or spice or something?

Their plan wouldn't have worked if those who partook in the crusades weren't willing to kill for their religion

A lot of the peasants that took part in the crusades were just fodder, plus there was no education back then so they were pretty gullible. Knights were obligated to fight for their kings as long as they had land and the kings were in sucking up to the pope.

You also had people who simply didn't care like mercenaries which made a bulk of the European armies. They'd fight as long as they got paid, or they disappeared/changed sides.

There was also Ottoman expansion into the Balkans which threatened countries like Hungary and Austria.

Religion was a big deal though along with geo-politics and economics.

And on the subject of Mormonism, that religion has absolutely no solid evidence to support ANY of its truth claims. Which for me makes it one of the worst religions of all time.
