Lorens jerks the last stage of the trigger, inadvertently pulling back on the stick and placing the reticle pipper where the moving target index previously was. The sabot round explodes out of the barrel, at first appearing to travel to the engine of the doomed airship, but ultimately misses as the destroyer falls just below the bullet's trajectory. The A-10 banks and turns parallel to the Excubitor. Lorens turns control over to the autopilot, leans forward and looks at his hands, trying to register what happened. He eventually lets his hands drop and takes a deep breath before sitting upright and taking back the throttle and stick. "Snowman, returning to formation." Lorens turns the A-10 back around to Tippy's aircraft, watching the destroyer fall to earth along the way. |
