This is a wonderful idea, any tips on how I can make it detect when my hand is open? I'm up for soldering stuff.

N/C pushbuttons. As soon as you release the button, it will close the circuit. Connect it to a small LED and a small smoke makes (A resistor and a some water would do if you're going cheap). I'd also connect a switch in series so you can turn it off.
