The F/AEX-3 Exis is proposed as the production variant for the Phoenix. Though the Exis will be inferior to the Phoenix in practically every aspect, more of them can be fielded. Some changes from the Phoenix-types include less-sophisticated avionics, a slightly weaker airframe due to the materials used in the construction of the craft, and a slight cutback in weapons capacity (including the removal of one coaxial cannon) to make room for a hydrogen fuel cell system. It does feature the stealth capability of fifth generation fighters and the avionics are up-to-date, so it will be a reliable interdiction craft that accomplishes the goal of Sweden's FS-F20 project. The Exis does have full-feature space operation capability, but several thrusters were removed from the design to make the design more cost-effective so the craft isn't any more maneuverable than the Swedish Gripen or Eurofighter Typhoon. With these changes, individual Exis units will cost an estimated $130 million each in the limited-production stage. |
