there are not enough particles to carry that energy, it will produce heat energy, so you might melt the asteroid

on the other hand we can just drill a BUNCH of nukes into the asteroid and blow that stuff up
with enough we can make small enough chunks that they wont affect us much at all

a cluster of well-planted nukes could shatter it into negligibly sized pieces that will safely burn up in the atmosphere

i mean like
nuclear explosions = force
having it far enough from an asteroid so that it won't make it explode but enough to push it would be the key

asteroids hardly have any length; they have forgeted up diameters.
it isn't as simple as to inventing something would do tug or push it.
