Ya, this was miscommunication, it's not politically correct but yes that is how it is. Britain where I live is too formal. UK is much more common.

When people are talking about the general area they'll say the UK and sometimes England, unless they want to specify Scotland or Wales
And yes, it's not politically correct, if we really wanted to be politically correct the Middle East wouldn't be a thing. It would be called just Western Asia.
