they got a bunch of US states for their western provinces, that was their choice
also didn't canada pretty much just trade off the western areas of the provinces, not completely

Canada can cede Nova Scotia, the bit of New Brunswick east of the western tip of Maine, and Newfoundland in exchange for ending hostilities with a non-aggression pact and the Canadian government will handle reparations for damages caused.
Our biggest cities are in Ontario and Quebec as well as our maple orchards. Nice try.
