I combined "top-down" events and playertypes to create this.

EDIT: Here's what you need to do this,

Install them both and then follow these steps,

Plant any brick of your desire

Now use your wrench to get to the events window and select "onPlayerTouch."

Select Client...

set2DCamera...

This part is your personal preference, but I recommend using 90 for the first box and then 25 for the second.

Depending on what numbers you put in you should be in a top-down view.

We aren't done yet, we need to lock the camera so you can't look up or down. This is why we got the playertype.

Start a minigame and select any of the 2D players and click "Create"

Walking on top of the brick again would have you in the same view as last time, but you can no longer up and down. If this is the case, you did everything correctly. Get some guns, friends, and a map and you're in for some fun!
This is not tested for multiplayer functionality, results may vary in fun-factor

I like it, make a map for it?
Edit: I just noticed, if you do decide to make a map, make the roof completely open or use glass in certain bits because of the forced zoom in.

I don't really understand anything else in terms of ideas except the use of the top-down playertype which is pretty straight-forward.

There is a playertype involved but I had to use events to fix the camera angle so it's more suitable for fast-paced action. I would not have even made this in the first place if there as already a playertype that did what I shown in the video.

My dream has always been to one day create a badass top down shooter map and open a server with it.
Next goal is to create a playertype that can be controlled like a twin stick shooter.

Can't you turn ray casting off for the roof, that way your camera won't be forced to zoom in?

I remember doing this a few years ago with a whole whack of Zombies.
It was fun.

This is correct, though you would obviously not be able to see inside then. Unless you're using a colourset with very transparent transparents, you should leave building tops open. This of course (at first glance) means no multi-floored structures, but you can make them with careful use of teleporting.

You could also use this playertype: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=61505.0 (download)
You wouldn't be able to set the camera distance though, so this way is slightly better.

I'd be up for a top down TDM/zombie game.
