This reminds me, is it possible to make a second source of shadow-casting light? It would be useful for these static maps that block out 99% of the universal light.

You can't. However I think you can make the wall shapes not cast a shadow somehow. Maybe it is done by including transparent faces?

Correct. All that is needed is a material set to transparent or emit/shadeless attached to a model to break shadows.

However, surely if you mess with the environment settings enough you can have a decent look without removing them?
