Yeah my dad actually bought this one then gave it to me about 3 years ago, so it's prebuilt. Should I just buy new computer components and build it myself?
Sure, sounds like it's time for a new one.
But for now you want to recover your stuff/have something to use until then

If you have access to another computer with the same os, Google "<your os version> create repair disc"

Because plugging in an SSD is just going to magically get the data off his HDD

Right now we're worrying about if his stuff can be recovered

Didn't know hard drives got old and died tbh
my old toshiba satellite went through two hard drives and it's on its third now (still works)
