we're allowed to use them for work purposes at our school except in physics and maths, it's looked down upon because you really should be bringing a scientific calculator for those subjects and get used to that
I don't understand this, really.
It's financially beneficial to the student to purchase an app of some sort to aid in those subjects rather than to purchase a £150 calculator to carry around and keep track of.

because in the exam they don't want you messing around on your phone, I'm guessing? it's not completely disallowed they just want you to get into the way of using something built only for that purpose
and calculators are £3 here, they're extremely cheap

exactly

phones have utilities other than texting and some teachers will tell you to just take a picture of what's on the board because no one has time for waiting for everyone to write it down.

Ohh I see. I confused a scientific calculator for a graphing calculator.
My point still stands regarding a graphing calculator, though.

we're not talking about those? we'll probably be issued them at the school, I don't use those at school so I don't know

well here's the thing, my school doesn't issue them and requires people to use them all the time.

my highschool provides graphing calculators most of the time

it's one of the snobby rich kid charter schools

while my family can barely afford them, every kid has one plus like the iphone 6+ and a macbook

Don't be a college professor who takes cell phones. As long as you're not distrupting the class, you're paying for it, you decide how you experience it.

My Geology professor actually took someone's cell phone during a lecture, lol.

Some teachers take it way too far. I had a particularly bitchy teacher last year who confiscated phones first offense no matter the circumstances. One kid's mom called him in an emergency situation and by the time he answered the teacher had her hand out and said "I don't care, should have asked first". She also had a windowless room with nearly blank walls, was about as exciting as watching paint dry, and was one of only a few teachers in the school to use computer spying software on all of us, but thats another story.

"Oh, an emergency? forget you, you should've asked first because I don't care what happens to your petty life because I know what is best! Should've asked first hahaha I feel so smug!"

can't remember if I ever got my phone taken

just gotta know how the teacher handles the cellphone policy

My school is cool so they let us use our phones during work if we want to listen to music or as a calculator, for research, take pictures of the board, etc. We're even free to use them in the cafeteria, before and after school. It's up to the teachers if they'll let you have your phone out or not, but most of the time they allow us have it out. Is a phone at school necessary? No, but it can assist the student and is pretty convenient.

I never understood why people brang their phones in my middle school though. They weren't allowed no matter what, so I didn't see why people had their phones when you could only really use ot for the 5 minutes you were on the bus and back. You couldn't even use your phones to make important calls if you had to, you had to use the phones in the classroom or the front office.

That being said, if it's against the rules then that's that. If you had your phone out and you were goofing off during class then you probably deserved it anyway.
