Basically someone developed a ransomware program called KeRanger, and bundled it with downloads for the Transmission bittorrent client when their site was compromised. Basically anyone who downloaded Transmission 2.90 was potentially affected (there was a 24-34 hour timeframe where the website was compromised). 2.91 and above should be clean.

The software requested a 1 bitcoin ransom for the decryption of files on the afflicted machine.

Hot. Now I can finally prove to my dad that Macs aren't 100% virus/ransom/malware/spyware free.

also this isn't the first mac/OSX malware, just the first major ransomware.
