I usually find that the quality of a joke comes in how well it was executed - not how old or new the content is. I too get tired of the maxx and pie crust stuff, but I still laugh when I see even an old joke that was implemented cleverly. I'd be willing to bet that the main reason people hate old or overused jokes is because there's been so much opportunity for failure in making them that they leave a bad taste in peoples' mouths. There will always be more bad jokes than good, but don't blame the context because that's not the part that's supposed to be funny in the first place.
In other words, I would highly discourage making stupid jokes at all, not just in the context of old memes and worn-out ideas. If you want to cash in on the humor of a meme instead of making your own joke, it would be advisable to do it with one that's still funny and new by itself.
That said, even old jokes can be funny when given a clever twist, so don't blame the context for the lack of quality of the content.
