the chosen rpg

   the chosen rpg is an rpgmaker rpg where you play as a guy named edge and go on his quest to kill evil after he grabs the overpowered sword of plot device. accompanying him is a trio of anime girls wearing virtually nothing. its bad. the art is deviantart tier anime drawings or default rpgmaker assets, the music is default rpgmaker assets, the gameplay is generic, the plot is idiotic, none of the characters have actual personalities, and the writing is awful. there is nothing salvageable, everything is regularly done better by games that cost nothing. yeah this game costs money by the way 2 american loving dollars at full price. thats even more pathetic when it lasts 2 hours.

   the combat pits your party against health sponge enemies which know only how to attack. the only things done in every battle are attacking and healing the guy who the monster hit. there is zero thought put into any encounter by both the developer or the player and its worse as an unwanted amount of enemies have a forgetload of health so battles take loving forever. also i hope you enjoy random encounters because you get those forgeters at a decent amount but thankfully you can run from all of them without hassle. either way, random encounters should not appear in any game made past 1980, they are never enjoyable and never will be. there are also arbitrary and piss easy puzzles that exist for no reason whatsoever such as rock sliding ones. the puzzles add nothing to anything so forget em.

   after a little bit you go into a chrono trigger-esque worldmap where you walk around on a bunch of continents. unlike chrono trigger there are no obvious indications of where you should head other than a one time message indicating a direction you get once you finish a plot progressing conversation. there is no world map so you try to enter every important looking map point you haven't been to and the game actually tells you you need all of these legendary artifacts you have never heard of to enter. like it straight up says you need the WING OF GOD to enter the elf village and stuff. trial and error eventually brings you to the right place but what a loving immersion killing disaster that was. just make the loving game auto take you there there is no value in exploring anything since the map is so loving empty. hilariously enough i wrote about how chrono trigger should have set an example to all future rpgs so this is especially sad.

   the plot is incredibly beyond awful. good and evil are gearing up to kill each other and the protagonist lives in a village that has a tower with the god sword in it and he is apparently a descendant of the guy who wielded the god sword before so he can use it. i personally take offense to the concept of inherited god powers, as a real american all men are created equal and should be able to slay evil with bullstuff plot devices, but whatever. edge, the main character, then wanders the world inexplicably to kill the bad guy as it is his destiny. there is some stuff about his ma and pa being dead too that is just sort of there until the final boss where it pops up again without loving warning. why can't his parents just stay dead like batman's.

   the time between edge grabbing the sword and edge fighting the big boss is a void of storytelling full of useless tasks that tell nothing about the characters or the world. absolutely loving nothing happens except edge being informed he has to grab the 3 macguffin sword upgrades to defeat evilman so he loving wanders the world and does. if this entire section of gameplay was just a cut to black with text explaining how he got everything that would be far better.

   there is an assload of plot shortcuts where the main characters just do things that happen to advance the plot with little provocation. for instance, edge grabs the plot device sword just out of the loving blue after beating off some guys who tried to steal it. like he just grabs it. also everyone just recognizes this legendary sword nobody has seen in two thousand years immediately. theres a ton more of this stuff like why the forget was this person outside the castle waiting to tp edge out when he got his ass punked by the boss in the first fight. why was she tracking the boss for months when you find him in 5 minutes. why do none of the villages attacked even have sprite changes to indicate damage. why does this game suck.

   characterization is as bad as everything else involving the writing. none of the characters have any sort of meaningful interaction. edge is sort of angsty and his parents are dead, all three of your scantily clad party members have loving nothing memorable about them barring a lack of clothing, all of the towns look the same, the boss just wants to be evil because haha eeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvviiiiiiiilll lll. any other character is so completely forgettable i forgot to include them in here. there is no character development barring edge confirming his parents are indeed dead and then becoming even more sort of angsty although this is barely seen since the game ends immediately after.

   everything is ripped from other stuff. all of the assets are from rpgmaker and im pretty sure even the deviantart tier main characters are from something else since in the trailer you actually see sprites of them with clothing on but i guess they lose all of that ingame. edge looks comically out of place everywhere he goes because he has his masterwork red and black edge armor continuously equipped even in the loving starter village. his sprite does not change ever. in battle sprites almost always don't match who you are fighting and are comically huge. the hodgepodge of assets make sure there is no sense of cohesive style. all of the sound effects and music are also ripped from probably rpgmaker and the music can be annoying as forget sometimes.

   this game sucks. its better than off because its shorter and the random encounters are less frequent and the puzzles aren't too annoying but other than that forget it.
