I had a similar spook recently, at a lower scale:
one day my computer randomly froze and my harddrive was making clicking noises. I immediately turned my computer off and when I tried to boot again an error came up saying that there was an error with the operating system. At that point I thought my harddrive was forgeted. Turns out I just had to reconnect the drive so it properly was connected, and now it works fine again
