The democratic socialist countries in Europe are on the upswing.

Better there than here.  :P

Fun facts:
The pledge was written by Francis Bellamy as part of a campaign to sell flags to schools, despite Bellamy being a Christian socialist.  It was a tremendously successful advertising campaign and flag sales sky rocketed.
Is this the first installation of your new hit TruTV series "Badspot Ruins Everything"?

okay so while i totally agree with the point that the pledge is dumb and ultranationalistic, it seems many non-americans have confused the pledge with the anthem
I wasn't confused, I know the distinction.
That's why I ended my post with "in regards to the national anthem", because I know they're seperate.

We don't have a parallel here for the Pledge.
We have a national anthem, but you only really hear it sung during international sports games.
School teams don't sing it or anything at their games.

you'd probably face the same anti immigrant people like here over there

Nobody is forcing you to say them lol, you don't even have to stand or anything. Sure some people are going to look at you weirdly but its not a crime or anything lol

Do you get punished if you refuse to do it?

Its our national anthem, its not very annoying when its the literal song of your people.

Idk about pledge but you should be proud that you have the right to honor your country, by flag or song.

lmao every country has that "right"

new idea: change schools constantly, on the search for teachers who attempt to punish you for not pledging

sue the school for money and move on to the next

lmao every country has that "right"
yeah for real

north korea has that right so much that most people choose to do it 24 hours of the day

my biggest problem with the pledge is how cult-y it is

just the name itself sounds like something out of 1984

lmao every country has that "right"
Okay wasn't gonna write an essay but you putting right in quotation makrs irked me to no end..

Nations today take their right to express their opinion for granted constantly, especially in USA in my experience. It is a norm for you that you have enough security to worry about gimmicky stuff like pledge of allegiance. The freedom your ancestors fought for, died for, was so you wouldn't have to hide your flag in your backyard in a box praying for the conditions to change. As an Estonian I have the privilege to know how much it means to have the right to wave your flag, own it even, and celebrate your country how you see fit. Since I wasn't born yet/very young I have no first-hand experience, but my parents lived the better part of their lives under soviet rule. My mother tells me stories about how once she found a small estonian flag, you know, the ones with the wooden stick the size of your finger, in the cupboard and told his parents, they didn't exchange a word about it and it was gone by tomorrow. There was so much fear about snitches, you could literally tell your neighbor was an estonian nationalist and get them in a lot of hot water, into gulag if he had an something like a flag or something. More rebellious youngsters used to gather in more isolated places and while camping carefully sing songs about freedom, what they really wanted. Do not make the mistake of taking what your ancestors fought for, paid for with their lives for granted, I know I won't.
