he asks for 50 dollars from each of his parents, giving him 100 dollars.
the shirt is only 97 dollars so that leaves him with 3 dollars after purchasing the shirt.
he gives each of his parents 1 dollar and keeps the last dollar for himself.

so $49 you owe + $49 you owe + $1 you don't owe must clearly = $99 no

give the remaining $1 to either of your parents.
now you owe $48 + $49 = $97, which was the price of the shirt.
