Author Topic: I hate fandoms and circlejerks - the thread; Old starfish or "ur right"  (Read 6560 times)

The worst people in fandoms are the kind that don't have any real friends. They instead just prefer to be coddled by other friendless weirdos in the same fandom. They consider the fandom to be their whole identity and suffer for it. It's why fandoms are so rife with drama.

HOWEVER if you find yourself hating a single person or group of people based on a casual shared interest, then that's just being irrational. It's not a very good road to go down if you don't plan on being a real piece of stuff. I'm a good example because of I have the chronic tendency to hate things if they're popular. Now while the hate feels very real, I can still at least say that it's completely illogical. The real problem is that I can't really express anger that has no rational basis. I end up sounding like an old man yelling at a cloud COUGH COUGH

What I'm trying to say is that hating people for dumb reasons is stupid and you shouldn't do it

-snip-

i don't mind someone being open about being in a fandom, etc as long as they don't rub it in my face. the only ones i really dislike are the people who don't shut up about x being better than y and their waifu is the best. some people in fandoms literally only discuss that show/game sometimes and it's a bit irritating but whatever floats their boat

did that one post piss you off so much you had to do that

Well considering you regurgitate butchered memes every other post I'd qualify it as a stuffpost

Whats wrong with Splatoon? Its more of a meme than it is a fandom. I'm not seeing much of it anywhere

So here's a scenario.
A bunch of people of group X share interest Y. They've given a specific name to anyone who has this Y interest. They gather on a forum related to interest Y. They make threads about things like:
  • The costume they made related to interest Y
  • Importing things like characters as models into various video games
  • Various forms of art they made related to interest Y
  • Arranging real life meetups, or talking about they have met up in real life, with other people interested in interest Y
  • How cool it would be if there was a convention for interest Y, or if people with interest Y could meet up at an existing convention
  • They have their own in-jokes and terminology that those outside the group may not understand

Surely such a scenario describes a fandom, and every fandom I've looked at has al these attribute apply to them.  But the Blockland forum also fits this scenario. We gather on this forum, a lot of us several hours a day, to discuss it. We have a specific name (Blocklanders) for ourselves. And all those threads are subjects I've seen a lot. Would you not classify Blocklanders, at least those at this level of involvement, as fandom? And if you disagree, do you have a good reason for it? Something other than "because then I couldn't say all fandoms are stuff" or a reaction image?

(Any gaming youtuber at that-- besides good ol' dunkey)
I don't know who this is, but this statement reeks of the "everything is stuff except what i like" mentality.

The problem is every group has their vocal minority; these are the people you hate. But these people are a tiny part of an overall group which just discusses it with themselves, maybe occasionally bringing it up in relevant conversation. And judging the entire group by the vocal minority's behavior is simply unfair.

What's funny about most of these "exceptions" people make get shafted once their hero makes a mistake.

It happened to GG and it happened to Jontron.

Just because you don't see much of it doesn't mean it is non existant.

splatoon is not as flamboyant as other fandoms like undertale or FNAF, if you can even call splatoon a fandom in this case

I usually have a negative bias towards popular things and as such i dislike fandoms.
But now that i see other people dislike fandoms, i like them.
Such is the life of a hipster friend chink.

In seriousness: i have a neutral opinion on the concept of fandoms.
Sometimes, i feel that a lot of people in a specific fandom are bad.

I like Filthy Frank, H3h3, and Leafy, but their fandoms are cancer with all of that Papa Franku, Papa Ethan, and Reptillian Army, and Dad stuff. They all beat jokes into the ground within a loving second, like the (GONE WRONG) (GONE loveUAL) thing.

I really can't stand lets players, besides Super Best friends, and sometimes Rooster Teeth. I hate Pewdiepie less because he's using his popularity to trash stupid stuff like YouTube pranksters, and clickbait.

So I'm with you on most things.

By definition splatoon has a fandom. In case you are unaware a fandom is a group of people with a similar interest. There is no set number so I would assume if there is at least 2 people, there is a fandom.

yeah I know, but it's far from being an annoying fandom

It isn't big enough to have developed a loud minority yet

used to be this way about weebos but it sucked being angry all the time about weebs so i convinced myself i didn't care anymore and now i don't. it mostly sucked because a lot of people that would potentially be awesome friends were weebs, and i hated being around them because i was so convinced that liking anime or whatever qualifier i chose is an inherently annoying thing. pretty sure i was mean to a lot of people that didn't deserve it and that was no good!!! now i just kinda figure like, why would i voluntarily let myself be stressed out over something stupid like that? if i can catch it i definitely try to avoid falling into that kind of thing, which means sometimes i overcompensate but O well

on a related note, wouldn't this forum kinda the same deal? we're a community built around a central object of interest, just like any fandom/circlejerk/cult/whatever u wana callit. you can definitely see people around on the outside that think we're weirdos too. we're small enough that it's kinda hard to tell but i think we definitely qualify
