I explained how condoms can break, and while it isn't a common occurrence - it can happen and it does.

a 98% success rate seems pretty loving good to me. Also I'm pretty sure both people normally have a back up (morning after pills or birth control pills) in-case stuff hits the fan. Also again I'm pretty sure you could feel the condom break most of the time. I'd be more worried about std's if a condom broke on me rather than the partner getting pregnant. And I would make sure to get both of us tested every so often
