It is cannon; it's referenced multiple times, but I personally like Garrus' joke in ME1.

"Some krogan believe that testicle transplants can increase their virility—counteract the effects of the Genophage. It doesn’t work, but that doesn’t stop them from buying. They’ll pay up to ten thousand credits each. That’s forty thousand for a full set. Somebody’s making a killing out there."

The whole point is that the Krogan have a load of redundant organs as backups, so if their primary organs are harmed they still have something to go back to. Their home world, Tuchunka, is a vicious place, and even without the Genophage a lot of Krogan youth wouldn't survive the wastes, so being horny organic brick stuffhouses is literally a requirement for them.
