Alright, it obviously isn't the franchise, but still, what an unfortunate name to give it

The secret behind the Sonic fandom's cringiness has finally been discovered!

what a forgetin coincidence

This explains so much lol

now THAT

is poetic irony

The Pickachu protein can also incorrectly bind to another molecule and as a result cause eye abnormalities. Although otherwise it's beneficial for visual acuity.

And the gene that used to be called Pokémon is a gene that can cause cancer.

this doesn't look like sonic the hedgehog to me, what the forget is going on who named these things

I don't blame them. One look on deviantart would give them a reason enough.

When the gene fails and mutates it causes the body to form incorrectly, and in certain fly embryos, it gave them spikey parts, which made them look like a hedgehog.

There are three hedgehog genes in vertebrates, two named after actual types of hedgehog, and the one named after Sonic.
There's also a 'tiggywinkle hedgehog gene' found in zebrafish, named after a character from Beatrix Potter's books.

Gotta cause autism fast
