--- Quote from: Red Spy on June 08, 2016, 02:12:07 PM ---What makes you say that --- End quote --- the article's not very subtle about the cause "With crude oil prices dropping, Venezuela has seen its revenue base collapse, since oil accounts for around 95% of the nation’s export revenue, according to Bloomberg. This has caused foreign exchange reserves to dwindle and a shortage of basic goods, leading to a recession and what amounts to a spiking inflation rate." |

--- Quote from: stufflord on June 08, 2016, 01:36:47 PM ---put to good use doing what i understand that you think its a good idea because it will help poor people or something but where does my motivation to even work go whats the point in working if every time i start to get up in the world it gets taken away no one will care to even try harder because they know as soon as they get to the top they will get stuff on by the government --- End quote --- i think i understand the rationale, but reasonable taxes aren't going to stop people from making money. you still benefit from having a higher income under our tax system, and there's no way someone would give up the opportunity to make more money only because it'll be taxed. also consider that the more income you make, the larger the amount of disposable income. ie someone making $40k a year will probably be using all or most of that income, and someone making $100k will almost certainly be using only a portion of it. the government certainly isn't taking all of your money, and they certainly aren't taking enough that making $100k is effectively identical to making $40k. that's an extreme of socialism that doesn't work (it discourages productivity because it removes incentive like you said), it's not how our tax system works, and it's not where any candidate is intentionally trying to steer us. --- Quote from: Akio- on June 08, 2016, 02:08:52 PM ---so throw away some of the core values of western democracy socialism is literally the best way to ensure poverty and a stuffty life for everyone. --- End quote --- pure socialism, yeah. it's also a nice way to make sure everyone has access and a right to stuff like education, healthcare, and roads which are entirely sound investments that actually generate a return in the economy |

--- Quote from: Foxscotch on June 08, 2016, 02:11:00 PM ---well I was just...... joking.. you know, vuvuzelas, when they were a thing during the 2010 fifa world cup... but that's kinda sad, and also doesn't really sound like it has anything to do with socialism. it is definitely funny to think of black market french fries though --- End quote --- I understood your joke quite clearly. The problem is two-fold. The first is that Venezuela's economy mainly was driven by agriculture and oil. Chavez seized the farms and then couldn't run them (go socialism!) so obviously, revenue from agriculture is down and food is in short supply. Then the price of oil dropped worldwide, so now the state's only developed industry isn't making much money at all. There is no diversification. They rely purely on the price of this oil. You can see why less revenue means more inflation. A free market would still be hurting from the plunge in oil prices, but wouldn't completely and catastrophically collapse like Venezuela. The USSR is the only socialist economy to even come close to the US in influence and strength, but they completely lacked stability and had to reform under Gorbachev or face collapse ( Khozraschyot info) |

the point of capitalism is the freedom to capitalize. socialism doesn't allow that. |
