what would have happened
if there was a civilian
in the nightbar massacre
who had a civilian firearm on them

they would have shot back
and would have had a statistically higher chance of survival, although that may or may not be negated by whether or not they exposed themselves to shoot Omar "Frag the cigarettes" Mateen

obviously not a club, but a police officer shot two heavily armed terrorists, significantly hindering their ability to carry out their planned attack. The only dead were the two terrorists. The man they attempted to kill survived, albeit wounded.
Considering one man with a handgun was able to stop an attack that would have likely killed dozens of people, I would think that perhaps there could have been a chance of incapacitating the Orlando shooter.

not really your average man...... a cop, trained specifically to be able to act in such a scenario, is hard to compare to a regular civilian

I would imagine that the mandatory training required to purchase a handgun and semi-regular range practice would have a similar effect. Heavily armed terrorists in body armor aren't really in anyone's list of "things I might see today," but it doesn't mean that a civilian with proper training and practice is completely ineffective.
