what exactly is the point of that? the number of deaths from ar-15s compared to overall gun deaths is almost inconsequential

I don't think that the whole discussion in light of the Parkland shooting revolves around 'overall gun deaths', it's the fact that students keep going to high schools and shooting up classrooms full of kids. That's what people are trying to address right now, and the fact that a majority of these mass-shooters tend to use AR15-style weapons is something worth looking into.

Like ultimately, any approach to gun regulation is speculative until it happens and we get some data on it. Why not start small-ish and then inform federal laws based on collected evidence?

Because after you ban the AR 15s kids will start using hand guns to shoot up schools, then you'll push for banning handguns, then they'll start using other weapons and you'll push for banning those as well. Of course you already know this. You just want to slowly remove guns from the united states because your a typical gun control advocating parasite.

First of all, I'm far more centrist on gun issues than most liberals. I'm not an advocate for 'gun rights', but I'm also highly skeptical of the efficacy of most gun regulations. The slippery-slope argument in this post is just par-for-the-course beachbum stuffpost material.

Second, ask yourself this: if handguns are equally viable tools for shooting up schools, then why do so many of the shooters use an AR-15? If they work equally well, why don't we see mass-shooters using different guns at a frequency which is proportional to the amount of different guns in civilian homes? In other words, hand guns are more common, so why do we see so many of them using AR-15s?

PhantOS:

Let's be honest, the only guns you need for self/home defense are a revolver/compact sidearm or 12 guage shotgun. Anything with higher capacity is literally an offense only gun

In what would would you stand your ground with an ar-15? Maybe if an CIA deathsquad showed up in your backyard, sure. or maybe if you're actually in Syria fighting in the front lines. But anyone who brings along an AR as a truck gun or keeps one tucked away under their desk is loving autistic
