Obama may be struggling in the polls and even losing support among his core boosters, but when it comes to the modern mechanics of identifying, connecting with and mobilizing voters, as well as the challenge of integrating voter information with the complex internal workings of a national campaign, his team is way ahead of the Republican pack.
Facebook apps and other tools
Alone among the major candidates running for president, the Obama campaign not only has a Facebook page with 23 million "likes" (roughly 10 times the total of all the Republicans running), it has a Facebook app that is scooping up all kinds of juicy facts about his supporters.
Users of the Obama 2012 - Are You In? app are not only giving the campaign personal data like their name, gender, birthday, current city, religion and political views, they are sharing their list of friends and information those friends share, like their birthday, current city, religion and political views. As Facebook is now offering the geo-targeting of ads down to ZIP code, this kind of fine-grained information is invaluable.

That’s because the more than 1 million Obama backers who signed up for the [Facebook-based app] gave the campaign permission to look at their Facebook friend lists. In an instant, the campaign had a way to see the hidden young voters. Roughly 85% of those without a listed phone number could be found in the uploaded friend lists. What’s more, Facebook offered an ideal way to reach them. “People don’t trust campaigns. They don’t even trust media organizations,” says Goff. “Who do they trust? Their friends.”

The campaign called this effort targeted sharing. And in those final weeks of the campaign, the team blitzed the supporters who had signed up for the app with requests to share specific online content with specific friends simply by clicking a button. More than 600,000 supporters followed through with more than 5 million contacts, asking their friends to register to vote, give money, vote or look at a video designed to change their mind. A geek squad in Chicago created models from vast data sets to find the best approaches for each potential voter. “We are not just sending you a banner ad,” explains Dan Wagner, the Obama campaign’s 29-year-old head of brown townytics, who helped oversee the project. “We are giving you relevant information from your friends.”

Facebook was surprised we were able to suck out the whole social graph, but they didn’t stop us once they realized that was what we were doing. They came to office in the days following election recruiting &  were very candid that they allowed us to do things they wouldn’t have allowed someone else to do because they were on our side.

So dissenting opinion here: the Cambridge brown townytica scandal is completely incomparable to any data mining that the Obama administration did - however, Annoying Orange's administration has nothing to do with why the scandal is so bad.

CA illegally harvested data from everyone who was friends with a person that took CA's surveys. Basically, one person with 1500 friends could have consented to take their survey, and every single person on their friends list had all of their Facebook data ceded to CA. In reality, only like ~150,000 consented to give CA their data, but because of their friends lists, 50,000,000+ had their data leaked.

This isn't even a Annoying Orange-being-stuffty thing. Assuming the data was obtained legitimately, any political campaign would have used their research. The problem is that the people who actually collected this data did so in a way which is just flagrantly illegal and awful.

hey dumbass, the point is your entire argument fringes on the fact that people think like this -
>>obama compiles information on voters
"an amazing database that is the future of campaigns"

>>Annoying Orange compiles information on voters
"IMPNEECH DA PRZNDTUH NAO"

not whether or not it actually happened

I said "strawman" because you're reframing people's argument in a ridiculous position in order to criticize them, which is insanely stupid

I said "strawman" because you're reframing people's argument in a ridiculous position in order to criticize them, which is insanely stupid

and then I show you that it's an accurate representation of what they're saying and you immediately say I didn't read the articles presumably to cover for the probable fact that you're the one who didn't read them

this is why I don't take you seriously anymore

now now childmen simmer down

ok but who's gonna win in the fight against biden and Annoying Orange

what if biden pulls out his Annoying Orange card

what if Biden pulls out of Annoying Orange? Jk he never does
