No, stricter defamation laws mean that you don't get to do what forgetin' Gawker did.
You don't get to ruin people's lives through lies. That is not what free speech is about. You can abuse freedoms, which is why criminals can't get guns and why you can't yell "BOMB!" in an airport.

yeah that's why libel and slander are already crimes
the difference i guess being that those are crimes because they're inherently malicious, whereas criticizing someone or being rude publicly probably isn't. ofc the line could be fuzzy at times but it's definitely there, and it's normally dangerous to let the government start enforcing anti-meanie policies in cases where there isn't going to be direct harm like you said
