--- Quote from: Magus on September 21, 2016, 12:18:18 AM ---Right, I forgot the Kurds. There's a metaphor in here somewhere. They got particularly shafted since there's no Kurdistan. Unfortunately for Iraqi democracy, they have several ethnic groups that hate each other (such as the Kurds). As for the Gaddafi thing... I got nothing. Look at the current state of the place... actually, has it been in the news at all besides being a place where I.S.I.S. has some presence? Maybe it's because Libya wasn't as significant to the balance of power. On a third note, as my International Current Events teacher noted: First war with Iraq had a clear goal: keep them out of Kuwait. Second war (and second Bush): invade Iraq, topple Hussein, and then what? Recent politics seems to have been lacking "and then what." --- End quote --- ding ding ding that's what my international relations teacher told me too and I agree with that statement Yes, the plan was to make a capitalist democracy but I think the plan got too muddled before Bush and the new government of Iraq could stabilize the country. Obama leaving Iraq didn't help whatsoever. Had we stayed for a while and trained Iraqi troops there's a good chance CIA might not exist right now. --- Quote from: SeventhSandwich on September 21, 2016, 12:40:35 AM ---Okay, so, leaving Iraq was not the 'only problem' with the Iraq war. The fact we even entered the country to begin with (on false premises of WMDs), proceeded to remove the established leadership, and then created a huge anti-American sentiment in the region by causing immense collateral damage, are all reasons why the Iraq war was a bad idea. You've conveniently left out all of the main problems with that conflict and only left in the single problem for which Obama is responsible. Also, 'taking out Saddam and holding free elections' is only okay when Iraqis have a hand in doing it. There was no consensus in Iraq that it was alright for us to just overstep Iraqi sovereignty and completely restructure their government. For instance, imagine if China decided that it was unbearable the way that we treat minority groups, so they just decided to come in and remove Obama from office and take over our political process. Would that be acceptable to you? --- End quote --- if we're talking about consensus, I'd ask PM Barham Salih. |
