i guess the idea is that if your entire joke rides on dehumanizing/demoralizing people it's probably in bad taste
i find it hard to believe that a simple joke would be the only reason for such a drawn-out debate. i don't know the specifics so i can't say for sure tho. it seems more likely to me that it evolved past a joke and instead turned into being offended at people being starfishs about a bad joke instead of only being upset over a bad joke. that's how these things seem to go
