Because general insults almost always evolve from slurs. For instance, moron, lame, and dumb.

Most people use the word 'friend' in the general sense; they aren't calling someone gay, and they're not even directly trying to insult gay people. That being said, you sound pretty immature when you go around calling people friends, especially on the internet. It's one of those insults that I mentally associate with pre-teens on Counter-Strike.

Why is dumbass still used as an insult
I just don't get it, like I do know it's an alternative for a dumb man, but why? It doesn't offend me and it just makes the person look stupid since they come up with dumb reasons why I am. "'Your steam name is Landmineman? Dumbass.' 'LOL STUPID DUMBASS KID GET REKT'" and another example from an experience I posted on bad words that make me cry myself to sleep at night discussion.

My friend invited me to a Team Speak channel and we played hugbox simulator, and one day after he went on vacation and I joined the channel again to be greeted by a group of teenagers who joined the lobby and said things like: "Who are you loving dumbass", "Stupid dumbass get out of here" "MrPutin poked you with 'Wake up dumbass' I tried to tell them how I was a friend before being banned for 1 second
