"An assault rifle is a fully automatic selective-fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine."
well by this definition, assault rifles are banned, unless you pay a $15,000 permit, and pass extreme background checks.

If someone wants to kill lots of people, said person will kill lots of people, regardless of the laws. Making guns harder to legally be obtained is not the proper way to go about it, because there are ways of illegally obtaining guns.
This is a slightly fallacious argument. The same could be said about laws against murder, but nobody wants to get rid of murder laws.

Every time you ban something, you're going to decrease the amount of people doing that thing by some appreciable amount. You're adding a negative incentive to that activity, and people will respond by doing it less. This is true for almost everything.

You have to balance whether the regulation is worth that decrease though. For instance, the war on drugs is an example of terrible regulation because it costs us tons of money to incarcerate otherwise non-violent criminals. The decrease in drug use as a result isn't that significant either.

My view on weaponry is that we should add harsher regulations for weapons that have a higher propensity for murder and a lower propensity for recreation/self-defense. For instance, hunting rifles would be less regulated, while hand grenades would be pretty much banned.

you're not one to decide what is enough and what is too little, if someone decides to invade my home with a rifle of any sort I'm not going to be on the short end of the stick, whether you like it or not.
No, I'm not. However, the odds of someone invading your home with a rifle currently are extremely, extremely small. You just don't hear about that sort of thing happening, because it almost never happens. I'm sure it has happened, but you act as though 1 in every 5 people will at some point have their house invaded by someone with a rifle in their lifetime.

Now imagine it's 10x harder to get a rifle.

Also, now I'm hearing about 51 dead in Florida. An assault rifle was used. Will this be the mass shooting where the US starts to actually make big changes?

i sympathise much more with the democratic party than i do the republican party, esp. these days
this, although i'm pretty centrist, kinda liberal though

If it's an assault rifle he probably got it from the black market

by the way laws and regulations don't affect the black market

An AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle. Not an assault rifle.

ar-15 would probably be an assault weapon, but not an assault rifle

not too informed on the details of guns, but since they use the ar-15 as an example on the page i'm guessing that's right

Both of these parties are corrupt. I do not align with either one.

I'm not too well educated on politics, but if I had to choose between parties I would choose Democrat

we forumers are too cool to be bound by the rules of policitical orientation
