i wanna change this loving abomination of an icon, but it refuses to change (it just stays the same when I try to change it..)

Make sure its 74x74 or 75x75

It has to be a 75x75 resolution image. You can easily do this in a photo editing application such as Paint.NET, or you can do this with an online converter with websites like this: http://resizeimage.net/

Once it's uploaded, it should be changed on your Edit Profile page as well.
