I want speakers that have great sound quality that last a long time with regular use.
I don't mind if it's a set of speakers (multiple units or whatever), and I don't care for the price, except when it's ridiculous for what you are getting.

What are some good brands for starters?

Beats are very overpriced for what they are.
I'd recommend some Logitechs, they sound good and last quite a long time.

im not a fan of anything more then 2.1 for computer use.

I have the orange Yamaha NX-50 speakers, they're really neat looking with great sound, 3-4 years old with 0 issues.
They used to come in several different colors, but I couldn't find anything else than the black ones available online.
