At the time, several people captured network packets for the incoming and outgoing data to the server. Since then, these "developers" have been attempting to restore whatever server behaviour they can by replicating the downstream communication on their own server.
Once again, the total sum of what they'll be able to achieve is extremely limited, and the sooner the kids move on to greener pastures, the faster we can all stop putting our fingers in our ears.
EDIT: It helps that all of the game's LUA script files can be easily studied, so you can see the upstream communication process and work out what the game is trying to get back from the server.
