i've done both and had a lot more fun with deviantart since its way easier to make fun of bad art on deviantart than it is on tumblr

tumblr at least has research and music and other cool stuff

deviantart has terrible fanart

i would like you to know that the good to downright terrible ratio of deviantart is nearly identical to tumblr
for every decent thing you'll come across 7 mediocre things

tumblr is where all the cool artists are at these days anyway (if they aren't being DMCA'd for making nintendo r34) and it also has an outstanding stream of quality stuffposts

either site is fine if you aren't following garbage but personally i'd get bored after 30-40 minutes of browsing
