I was regularly spanked as a kid
I think I turned out fine (at least as far as that goes), in the long run, but not everyone will
spanking alone will probably not be that bad for the kid but it can turn into fear and distrust. you shouldn't be afraid of your parents. that's a recipe for disaster. that's how you get kids who hide mistakes like wrecking a car from their parents. you want your children to be able to come to you for help when they do something wrong, not to keep it from you out of fear for being hit

I was spanked as a kid and I don't fear my dad. I only really "fear" him because he has the most stubborn attitude and train of thought and gets pissed if you don't think the way he thinks
